This is a full-day program that will focus on the role of institutional review board (IRB) non-scientific, un-affiliated members (Community Members) and members of community research advisory boards (CRABs). The morning session will review the
history of research, how abuse has shaped federal regulations governing human subjects research, and current accepted practice.
Attendees will then choose one of two afternoon sessions that further explore the professional development needs of Community
Members or CRABs. The Community Members session will address questions such as: What, exactly, is a community member? Who
do they represent? What are their educational needs? and How can they enhance the work that they do ? The CRABs session will describe
the innovative development of a CRAB as a model for building better partnerships between minority communities and research
investigators. By the end of this afternoon session, attendees will be able to describe the role and purpose of a CRAB; determine
the benefits and challenges of a CRAB; and identify steps in the development of a CRAB.
